One May Have to Be Enough - The Challenges of Secondary Infertility.

After the successful birth of the first or even the fifteenth child, many couples take it for granted that they will be able to have another and not suffer from secondary infertility. In fact, many people are unaware that such a condition even exists. It seems illogical that after bringing one healthy baby into the world, there would be a struggle to have another. It's hardly illogical. In fact, sixty percent of couples who have one or more child suffer from secondary infertility but simply don't understand enough to get treatment.

What is secondary infertility?

Over three million women in the US struggle with secondary infertility and many are not seeking treatment. Many couples simply give up after a few years of trying due in part, to their doctor's inability to take it seriously and their own lack of knowledge. There is nothing particularly complicated about secondary infertility as its causes and treatments are the same as 'regular' infertility.

What are some solutions to secondary infertility?

When unable to conceive another child, a couple needs to take an honest look at their lifestyles and options. Have either partners gained weight or relapsed into smoking? Have either one experienced an infection or sustained injury since the last pregnancy? Often times a woman may still be breast feeding and the natural prolactin hormone is interfering with her cycle. Of course both partners should have exams with their doctors but women especially should be wary of endometriosis or pelvic adhesions that might have developed since last giving birth. When the cause of the secondary infertility is discovered, treatments such as drug therapy or minor surgery can help to correct any problems and make way for the new addition. If the couple is still unable to conceive, adoption is always a viable consideration. Although it is a lengthy process, giving your love to an adopted child is just as rewarding as giving birth.

The time allotted before alternative measures are taken when a couple is trying to start or expand their family is one year. Many couples start to panic after only a few months. If you are hoping to get pregnant a second, third or even fourth time, give nature a while before resorting to other methods. Your body may just need the time to recoup between giving birth and the first tumultuous year of child rearing. When you are struggling with secondary infertility allow yourself the time to enjoy your existing children but don't give up hope on welcoming another.
