The Struggle between Infertility and Catholicism.
One of the greatest debates in the last few decades has been between the growing science of infertility and Catholicism. The Catholic Church is one of the most powerful religious organizations in the world with dedicated followers world wide. It has shaped much of the history of the western world and influenced that of the east. Followers of the catholic faith live their lives with the firm belief in the holy trinity and the rules of appropriate behavior outlined in the catholic bible. For a devout catholic, the holy bible is the law and any deviation from it can mean personal and sacred disgrace. Because of this, there is a great deal of controversy surrounding new scientific discovery and schools of thought. Many practicing Catholics believe that the advances medical science has made in the treatment of infertility go against holy law and are therefore considered to be amoral. Catholicism's stand on infertility treatments In the 1990's, the Pope ruled against modern infertility treatment. After much thought, he announced that conception was only proper in the eyes of the church when it happened 'naturally' between a man and a woman living as husband and wife. On the Infertility and Catholicism view, fertility drugs, surrogate mothers and perhaps most controversial, in vitro fertilization all were dismissed when the Pope made his ruling. In vitro procedures are especially contrary to the church as part of the procedure involves discarding embryos which are not ideal for survival when implanted into the mother. This is a double offense when the Catholic Church's stand on abortion is considered. Who is affected? The church's stand completely alienates same sex marriages, single women wanting to conceive and couples struggling with physiological infertility issues. This can be a challenge to your faith if you happen to belong to one of these groups. In order to abide by the church's ruling, these groups of people would have to accept their inability to be parents as God's choice and focus their energies elsewhere. If you are a devout catholic and discover that you can not have children for one of many reasons, you may be comforted by the idea that it is God's choice that you remain childless. However, if this is not comforting to you, the church supports adoption through catholic agencies. There is no reason to be thwarted by your own beliefs. Even though you may be unable to conceive 'naturally' by choosing to adopt you can still bring a child into your life and resolve your own conflict with infertility and Catholicism.
